As blogger Stephanie Nielsen recovers from injuries sustained in a plane crash, thousands of her readers have banded together to help raise money for medical bills and other expenses. It turns out there’s something to all this social media stuff after all. It does foster relationships, and it allows us to meet and impact people all over the world.

I experienced this just last month after the death of my grandfather. Several people from Plurk and Twitter expressed sympathy and sent uplifting messages. Cyberspace doesn’t have to be this vast wasteland where everyone is jockeying for position and celebrity. It can be, and often is, a place where people unite for a common goal.
